How to Use Gloss

Get the most out of Gloss with this quick guide to setup and controls.

Getting Started

Pin the Extension

Pin Gloss to your browser toolbar for quick access:

  1. Click the puzzle icon in Chrome's toolbar (top-right)
  2. Find Gloss in the extensions list
  3. Click the pin icon next to Gloss

Go to YouTube

Navigate to any YouTube video. Gloss works automatically on educational content, tutorials, tech videos, science documentaries, and more.

Watch for Definitions

As you watch, Gloss analyzes the video and slides in definitions from the right side of the screen. Click any term to learn more, or click the Gloss icon to open the full definitions panel.

4 Ways to Toggle Analysis

Control when Gloss analyzes videos. When paused, analysis stops and definitions are hidden.

Keyboard Shortcut

The fastest way to toggle analysis on or off:

Alt+Shift+G

Right-Click Menu

Right-click the Gloss icon in your toolbar:

  1. Right-click the Gloss icon
  2. Click "Analysis Active" to toggle
  3. Checkmark = ON, No checkmark = OFF

Side Panel Toggle

Toggle from within the definitions panel:

  1. Click the Gloss icon to open the side panel
  2. Use the toggle switch in the panel header

Process Indicator

Click the gloss indicator that appears on top right corner of video pages:

When Gloss is analyzing a video, you'll see a small indicator in the top right corner of your screen. Click it to see a menu where you can pause or resume analysis instantly.

Tips for Best Results

  • Educational content works best - Gloss excels at tutorials, lectures, tech videos, science content, and how-to guides.

  • Click terms to learn more - Each definition can be expanded for additional context.

  • Open the side panel - Click the Gloss icon to see all definitions in one place, searchable and organized.
